Pingree School seeks an English Teacher for the 2018-2019 academic year. Responsibilities include teaching four sections at various grade-levels (though primarily grades 9 & 10), meeting one-on-one with students during free time to workshop papers and offer extra help as needed, contributing to curriculum development, and working as part of a collaborative department.
The discussion-based classroom is at the heart of Pingree’s English program. Successful candidates will demonstrate an eagerness to work closely with students to help them develop their own voices and ideas through discussion and writing. The curriculum encompasses both traditional and modern literary works, and it emphasizes critical thinking and reading alongside analytical and creative writing. We seek candidates who convey passion for a diversity of literature and dedication to the writing process, who are comfortable with new classroom technologies as appropriate, who are committed to professional development and sharing best practices with colleagues, and who will build a good rapport with students.
In addition to teaching English, the position includes coaching and/or supervising two seasons of a sport or equivalent activity, as well as serving as an advisor. Consequently, candidates must exhibit both a passion for their subject matter, as well as a commitment to working with adolescents both inside and outside of the classroom.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in the field, a minimum of three years of experience working in a classroom environment, and a demonstrated commitment to developing core reading, writing, and critical thinking skills in adolescents.
