US Learning Specialist Brooklyn Friends School seeks an experienced Learning Specialist for a full-time position in its Upper School, a diverse and dynamic learning community of approximately 210 students. The Upper School Learning Specialist is a member of the US guidance team, working closely with the Upper School Head, Counseling staff, the Dean of Students, IB (International Baccalaureate) Coordinator, advisors, and other members of the All-School Guidance Committee. He or she is a pivotal source of academic support for students with diverse learning needs, their families, and their teachers. The Learning Specialist teaches one 9th grade Study Skills course and provides interventions through individual and/or group meetings with students as necessary. The Learning Specialist is a key resource for the faculty and families. He or she works with teachers to help them understand students' learning needs and differentiate classroom instruction, and communicates with teachers about students of concern. He or she also remains in close contact with families about students’ learning support needs and sets up and tracks the progress of academic interventions at home. The Learning Specialist reviews and coordinates evaluations, develops learning plans, makes appropriate referrals, coordinates with outside tutors and other support services, oversees the tracking and administration of in-school accommodations, and coordinates and administers disabilities accommodations for any testing done through outside organizations, such as The College Board or ACT. Additionally, he or she will review selected Admissions Office (Enrollment Management) cases and participate in conversations with families concerning college planning where appropriate. The Learning Specialist must be an effective communicator who can work productively with students, faculty, and parents. He or she needs to be flexible to address the changing needs of our school community. An advanced degree in a relevant area and experience working with upper school students are required.
