The Upper School biology teacher has full responsibility for teaching courses in biology and environmental science (including honors, AP, and electives) and for guiding honors science students in their independent research projects.
Teach biology and other subjects as assigned.
Design a developmentally appropriate curriculum and plan for a well-articulated plan of teaching and assessing.
Maintain an engaged classroom environment to support student learning.
Sustain frequent contact with students and parents about student performance and behavior. Participate in parent teacher conferences as necessary.
Write individualized advisee conference notes and student reports for each student at required periods during the year.
Serve as an adviser and complete all activities and assignments related to this role.
Share in duties like lunch clean-up, service projects, Friday School, and other such tasks.
Pursue professional development opportunities.
Be willing to help plan and chaperone weeklong Winterim experiences.
Serve on Exhibition Committees, Upper School Committees and school-wide committees as necessary.
Participate in Admissions Open House and other school events as requested by the Head of the Upper School or the Head of School.
Attend and support after-school activities and programs (e.g. concerts, theater and class programs).
Support the School’s commitment to diversity and multicultural education.
Work collaboratively with colleagues in the US and across divisions.
Serve as an active member of the cross-divisional Science Department.
Plan vertical science curriculum with other science-teaching colleagues.
Complete required H.R. trainings each year (CPR, first aid, mandatory reporting, handling of hazardous materials, etc.)
Supervise students in the classroom, on the grounds, and on field trips or related experiences outside of class.
Must have strong interpersonal communication skills to use in working with students, parents, and colleagues. Heathwood teachers must care deeply for young people, be adept at interacting with parents, and contribute to a warm and supportive faculty.
Must maintain appropriate daily contact with administrators, colleagues, and other staff.
May have some contact with the Board of Trustees but this will be at the direction of the Head of School.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of pedagogy and the constructivist approach to learning.
Enjoyment of working with teenagers and a thorough understanding of the specific developmental needs of high school students.
Experience with interactive whiteboards and other technological resources that enhance student learning and assessment.
Ability to use a variety of assessment techniques and to demonstrate strong instructional and classroom-management skills.
Minimum of five years experience in secondary education.
Primarily indoor classroom teaching with occasional field trips. Some evening and weekend commitments. The Upper School science program is housed in the Robinson Center for Science and Math. The classroom has, in addition, a fully equipped laboratory to facilitate the frequent use of experimentation as a critical component of the science curriculum.
