The Foote School seeks a talented, energetic individual to join its faculty as an upper elementary music teacher. Music and the arts play a key role in each student’s experience. One of the primary goals of arts instruction at the Foote School is to develop and expand children's natural abilities of perception, interpretation, and appreciation of the forms, sounds, and language of creativity. Our curriculum is designed to encourage a positive attitude and a lifelong interest in the arts.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in music instruction and should demonstrate passion for the subject along with flexibility, creativity, and a deep interest in this age group. This is a three-quarters time position, and anticipated hours will be from 11:00am to 4:30pm each day; classroom instruction will be from 11:00am to 3:00pm, followed by oversight of the after-school instrumental music program from 3:00pm to 4:30pm.
Present an inspiring and engaging (general/vocal) curriculum based on a Kodály sequence that builds understanding of music and extends to instrumental instruction, such as soprano and alto recorder, hand bells, guitar and drumming
Collaborate with fellow music teachers and other faculty members to students for performance at several all-school assemblies and events during the year, including traditional dances for the annual May Day celebration
Coordinate the school’s after-school instrumental music program, including hiring and communicating with teachers prior to the school year, and organizing year-end recitals
Consult with and provide extra support to small groups of students preparing for special events, such as ninth graders preparing for poetry cabaret and for Chinese exchange program events where music is shared
Bachelor’s degree in music education; master’s degree preferred
Minimum of 3-5 years experience teaching this age group
Training in the Kodály method and Solfège instruction is preferred
Mastery of an instrument such as piano or guitar for accompaniment in performances.
Experience in teaching both individuals and groups of students in this age group
Experience with integrating technology into a music curriculum
