Concord Academy’s Modern & Classical Languages department seeks to appoint an outstanding teacher in support of a strong and well-established Latin program. The successful candidate will be an accomplished teacher of Latin and an innovative educator with excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated organizational ability, and a passion and enthusiasm for working with adolescents. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable working with beginners who are new to conjugation and declension and with advanced students engaged in literary analysis and translation of ancient texts. Throughout all levels, the teacher would instill a curiosity for exploring classical cultures and civilizations. Concord Academy has an active Latin Club and offers travel programs to Rome and other destinations where ancient cultures thrived. A willingness to coordinate these programs is a plus.
We actively seek applicants who reflect and support our mission-driven commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive school community. The school provides a competitive benefits package and salary is commensurate with experience. All faculty members at Concord Academy participate fully in the life of the school; responsibilities include advising, serving on committees and/or clubs, and periodically providing an adult presence at school events. Coaching an athletic team is welcomed but not required and is remunerated separately. On-campus housing may be available, but it is limited, and faculty members are not required to live at the school.
In addition to having an advanced degree and experience teaching at the secondary or undergraduate level, preferred qualifications include a record of making Latin an accessible language to the full range of students and an interest in working with classics students to explore Ancient Greek. Teaching responsibilities for 2018-19 will be commensurate with the school’s needs and the successful candidate’s experience.
About Concord Academy
Concord Academy is an independent, coeducational boarding and day school renowned for world-class faculty, passionate students, and graduates who make their mark on the world. Founded in 1922, Concord Academy has long balanced high academic standards with a focus on educating the whole student through the arts, athletics, and engagement in the world. Our community thrives on a love of learning, thanks to the care and partnership of teachers who support our students as individuals and challenge them every day to think critically and creatively.
Innovative teaching drives our wide-as-you-can-dream curriculum. Our rigorous approach to the sciences, arts, and humanities is infused with opportunities for intellectual growth, experimentation, and hands-on learning. CA students are honest, dedicated, and self-driven — some of the brightest, most curious, and inventive young people you’re likely to encounter. Within a structured framework, our experienced teachers afford them the flexibility to learn as they do best — while achieving personal goals, whether building a robot or directing a mainstage performance. Creative problem-solving and creative expression are at the core of the CA e...xperience.
Our 39-acre campus on Main Street in Concord, Mass., is home to nearly 400 students in grades 9 through 12 from nearby towns and around the globe. We bring students out into the world, and the world to our campus. In our close-knit community, we prize collaboration over competition. Our daily interactions are shaped by uncommon levels of trust. At CA, we do more than embrace diverse perspectives and backgrounds. We foster independent thinking. We invite passionate dialogue and debate. We believe that living attentively, questioning assumptions, and speaking one’s own truth are essential elements of an engaged and active learning experience.
When our students graduate, they’re prepared not only for college but also for lives of service and impact. Our alumnae/i are authors and ambassadors, entrepreneurs and engineers, dancers and doctors. This is a place where students love to learn, where creativity and trust are abundant natural resources, and where the history and literature of New England enrich us every day.
Concord Academy engages its students in a community animated by a love of learning, enriched by a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, and guided by a covenant of common trust.
Students and teachers work together as a community of learners dedicated to intellectual rigor and creative endeavor. In a caring and challenging atmosphere, students discover and develop talents as scholars, artists, and athletes and are encouraged to find their voices.
The school is committed to embracing and broadening the diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and talents of its people. This diversity fosters respect for others and genuine exchange of ideas.
Common trust challenges students to balance individual freedom with responsibility and service to a larger community. Such learning prepares students for lives as committed citizens.
