Presbyterian School, located in the heart of Houston's Museum District, is seeking an experienced Literacy Intervention Specialist to join the Academic Enrichment Center team. The Presbyterian School Academic Enrichment Center was developed to recognize and respond to the needs and gifts of students, providing an extension of classroom based differentiated instruction.
At Presbyterian School, the Literacy Intervention Specialists provide targeted intervention services to small groups of students focusing on the remediation of phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, reading difficulties and foundational writing skills. In addition, the Academic Enrichment Center specialists work with classroom teachers, discussing and modeling best practices. Communication with parents and community professionals is an ongoing dimension of this job, as is the interpretation of professional learning assessments. The Academic Enrichment Center team provides parent education for our community.
A qualified candidate will have certification as a Literacy Intervention Specialist, Academic Language Therapist, or equivalent, with training in literacy assessment, goal setting, remediation strategies, and progress monitoring. Skill in extracting applicable classroom accommodation from complex educational assessments is required, as is the ability to guide parent understanding of recommendations, accommodations and remediation. A successful candidate will exhibit strong character and will commit to supporting the mission, programs and policies of Presbyterian School.
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, Educational Remediation or related field. Master’s degree preferred
Certification as a Literacy Intervention Specialist, Academic Language Therapist or equivalent
Experience in a selective independent or public school setting
Research-based knowledge of early learning, language acquisition, and number sense development.
Research-based knowledge of common learning disabilities and effective approaches to remediation.
Training in a variety of small group remediation and support techniques.
Demonstrated skill in establishing positive, collaborative relationships.
Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues, parents and students
Comfort in speaking before parent groups
Positive, solution-focused approach to problems
Demonstrated commitment to professional growth
