MMI Preparatory seeks an innovative and qualified, full-time middle grades teacher to join our English faculty for the 2018-19 school year. Candidates should have a strong background in education with an equally strong commitment to student success. The position will involve teaching students in grades 6 to 8 while also leading co-curricular activities, and serving as a student/class advisor.
The successful applicant will be a motivated individual with a keen interest in encouraging and inspiring students to love learning and excel in the English subject area. He/She must have a strong knowledge of vocabulary and grammar with a passion for reading and writing, and an understanding of thought development and organization. We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic, creative, and interested in implementing learning strategies that support authentic learning environments.
A degree in English or Education is expected; an advanced degree with interdisciplinary teaching experience is highly desirable. The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic, forward-thinking educational team and will have strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee and foster the academic, social, and character development of each student.
Develop and maintain long range and daily instructional plans for each course taught.
Recommend textbooks and teaching materials for each course taught.
Integrate technology seamlessly into teaching strategies and practices.
Use a variety of teaching and assessment tools and strategies.
Develop lessons that promote problem solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills.
Structure lessons that encourage risk-taking in learning and model life-long learning.
Actively involve students in the classroom through group work, project-based learning, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques.
Teach content and skills in English language literature, and composition.
Work closely with librarian to promote a love of reading.
Provide individual and small group instruction for students who have not achieved language competency commensurate with their potential.
Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas.
Establish and maintain standards of student conduct with cooperation of the school administration.
Maintain professional competence through participation in school- and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
Identify student needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve social health, attitude and learning problems.
Communicate with parents and school counselors on the individual student's progress.
Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees.
Act as a Grade Level Advisor to encourage and develop social cohesion within the grade level assigned.
Perform other duties as may be reasonably assigned.
