Columbus School for Girls seeks to hire an energetic and creative part-time Upper School Chinese teacher to begin in the 2018-2019 academic year. Major Functions and Responsibilities: - Teach Chinese classes to upper level students.
- Collaborate regularly with the other Chinese teacher to ensure a cohesive Chinese curriculum.
- Create a course that strives to make each class an immersive experience focused on improving the language skills of students while also incorporating Chinese culture, history, and literature. The teacher will primarily use the target language for instruction and design a student-centered course.
- Participate actively in the life of the school, including leading clubs and/or activities, chaperoning school trips, and possibly coaching.
Experience, Characteristics, Qualities: - Bachelor’s or post-graduate degree in Chinese, in teaching Chinese as a second language, or equivalent degree and experience; Master’s degree is
- Near-native fluency in Chinese (equivalent to a minimum rating of Advanced Low or above on the ACTFL’s Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test)
- Experience using Comprehensible Input (CI)/Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) methodology preferred.
- Strong candidates will have at least three years of experience teaching Chinese, preferably at an independent school.
- An understanding of the value of an all-girls education and the eagerness to learn about the best ways to help young women of promise to reach their full potential as learners and leaders.
- A work ethic of flexibility with the ability to revise curricula regularly to reflect what is relevant and necessary to know now, and adopting new tools for learning when they are useful to both students and teachers.
- Excellent communication skills, a genuine appreciation of adolescents, a sense of humor, and the ability to work well within a diverse, collaborative environment.
