Major Gift Officer - Secure funds for the organization by managing a group of assigned, qualified donors assuring that as many as possible are retained as continuing donors to the Severn School and are upgraded in their giving and involvement. The benefit of this position will be the satisfaction of helping donors fulfill their passions and interests through their philanthropy to Severn School. This position is an externally focused role. Reports to Director of Development
Key Responsibilities • Identify and prioritize campaign prospects; participate in prospect assessment and assignment processes • Create individual goals for each person on his or her case load based on the donor's history of giving and the organization's knowledge of that donor's potential. • Solicit major capital and annual gifts, as well as deferred gifts where appropriate. • Create a plan for each donor that will serve as a foundational communication and marketing plan for each person on the caseload. Will faithfully and on a timely basis execute that plan so individuals on the caseload are retained and upgraded. • Work with program and the communications department to secure appropriate project information, including budgets, and create offers, proposals and asks that will be used with persons on the caseload to secure gifts. • Will assist with monthly reports as required by management that accurately reflect caseload activity and performance. • Perform other major donor activities as may be required.
Qualifications The successful candidate will have experience working and cultivating relationships with diverse constituencies and proficiency soliciting major gifts. S/he should possess a commitment to Severn School’s mission, have a passion for education, enjoy multi-tasking, and work collaboratively with colleagues, alumni, parents, and volunteers. The ideal candidate will have past involvement in a fundraising campaign.
Requirements • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred • 3+ years fundraising experience, ideally in an independent school, college, or university environment • Proven track record of donor solicitation and demonstrated success soliciting and closing major gifts • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills • Familiarity with RE or comparable fundraising database • Excellent interpersonal skills
