The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, co-educational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full time Middle School Mandarin Teacher to begin in August, 2018. Mandarin teachers are responsible for the development, implementation, and progression of the Calhoun curriculum, and the success of its students. Calhoun faculty are highly collaborative, and they use the latest research and inquiry-based approaches to challenge their students. We inspire students to problem-solve and strive to provide a positive learning environment in which all students can excel.
Essential Job Functions
Develop lesson plans and teach Middle School Mandarin.
Cultivate a love of Mandarin language and culture through interactive, joyful learning.
Provide differentiated and small group instruction based on the preferred learning modalities of students.
Create a positive learning environment for students and inspire students to hold themselves to a high standard of academics and character.
Maintain anecdotal and assessment records to inform thoughtful, comprehensive narrative reports.
Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and ensure student progress.
Attend faculty meetings and conferences as needed.
Maintain consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferences.
Participate in parent/teacher meetings.
Strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with Calhoun’s mission and values.
High level of professionalism.
Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of Mandarin.
Interest in working in a progressive and humanistic school.

Flexibility and ability to cope with change.
Bachelor’s degree in Mandarin or related field.
Teaching experience; 3 years of teaching experience preferred.
