Charles Wright Academy is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1957, the school enrolls 680 students in grades junior kindergarten through twelve. We are located in a suburban neighborhood southwest of Tacoma, approximately one mile from Puget Sound and within the shadow of Mt. Rainier.

Summary: This position is a full-time faculty appointment for the 2018-19 academic year and reports directly to the Head of School, managed in concert with the Academic Division of Directors. Charles Wright has historically had a School Chaplain to attend to the spiritual needs and pastoral care of the students, families and community since its earliest years. Our school community is composed of students, staff, and families who represent many faith traditions. Within a secular school culture, we celebrate this as well as hold in high value the principle of free and open inquiry.
Teach weekly grade level lessons in the Lower School
Has the opportunity to teach Comparative Religions in the Upper School
Conduct monthly reflections with students in the Middle School
Shared management of the MS/US service learning program and initiatives
Education for those of many faiths, and of no faith, is expected
Serve as a resource for faculty as they develop lessons about world cultures and religions
Participate in some grade level overnight trips
Coordinate with another faculty member, student, divisional, and school wide service learning programs, including: Chapel Home programming, Boys and Girls Club programming, MS service learning program, plus more
Plan and lead several school-wide and divisional celebrations, which include: Baccalaureate Services, Commencement, Christmas Eve Service, December Holiday Program, Founders Day Celebration, plus more
Be a key member of the student support team at the school
Actively reach out to support families at times of need or grief
Help guide school leadership in the spiritual and emotional support of the school community
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have earned a bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree is preferred. It is expected that the Chaplain will have inter- and cross cultural competence, and be a critical and strategic thinker. The candidate must also have experience working with young people and leading interfaith programming. Formal training in counseling is strongly desired in addition to formal training, experience, or study in a faith tradition or practice.
Familiarity with Google G-Site for education is preferred. A commitment to diversity and inclusion with a strong sense of cultural competency is desired. Essential elements for the position include the ability to inspire children, the capacity to work cooperatively with peers, and a joyful sense of humor.
