The River Farm Cooperative School is a small, progressive, nature-based K-8 school in Alexandria, VA with rigorous academics and an emphasis on small, mixed-age classes, experiential learning, the outdoors, and teaching for social justice. As we enter our 5th year, we are seeking to hire a part-time director who will assist the board of directors in the running of the school. Top candidates will be personable and organized and will have experience with management, administration, and educational leadership.
The position will be 20 hours per week and will start in September 2018, with a preference for someone who can train during the spring semester of 2018. School is in session September-early June, 8:45 am – 3:00 pm. Holidays and most school vacations follow Fairfax County. Salary of $25,000. Benefits include paid time off and tuition discount. Stipend available for training this spring and for tasks completed during the summer.
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
Experience as a lead or team teacher in an elementary or middle school or three years of experience as a director or manager of a school or other organization.
An understanding of and appreciation for intercultural differences; commitment to diversity and social justice.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of curriculum development and/or program building.
Willing and able to hike outdoors in all kinds of weather.
A passion for working in a cooperative educational environment.
High-energy, creative, flexible, nurturing, and collaborative spirit.
Background in progressive education (knowledge of cooperative education, Reggio Emilia, Montessori, Waldorf, or another progressive education pedagogy)
Spanish language fluency
Duties to tackle with support of board of directors and other members:
Supervising and Collaborating with Teaching Staff
Daily supervision of, and collaboration with, teaching staff
Providing support for teachers with any parent or student issues
Observing and contributing to teacher evaluations (dependent on candidate experience)
Coordinating with Board of Directors
Contributing to short and long-term organizational strategic planning
Attending board meetings (held monthly on weeknights)
Assisting with Admissions
Fielding inquiries from interested families
Scheduling applicant visit days
Notifying families of admissions decisions and following up
Planning and leading membership meetings
Determining compliance with membership obligations and recommend or take corrective actions with parents and students
Develop and coordinate annual welcome packets and enrollment contracts for new and returning members
Networking with other schools and potential funders
Handling paperwork required for operation (permits, insurance, leases, etc.)
