Position and Summary Reporting:
Reporting to the Head of the Summer Program, Instructors will plan and implement classroom curriculum and strategies for rising fifth, sixth, eighth, or ninth grade students.
The primary objective of Summer Instructors is to prepare students to academically succeed at rigorous independent schools. Students should gain improved competency in the subject matters and skills being taught.
Design a 5-week, advanced-level course inclusive of syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, test/quizzes, grading rubrics
Teach three sections of a core subject five times a week (45-min classes, 14 students per class)
Collaborate with Oliver administrators to outline expected curricular outcomes and track student progress
Write detailed Interim and Final Evaluation Reports for every student
Teach one section of an interdisciplinary elective course of choosing three times a week
Serve as an advisor for one section of students
Collaborate with teacher’s assistant to support students
Be available for one-on-one and group tutoring during daily tutoring periods
Serve as dorm faculty during residential week
Attend weekly faculty meetings
Participate in parent-teacher conferences
Acceptance of the position requires a commitment to attending all required program meetings. The Summer Program operates from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. during the day school component and follows an alternate schedule during the residential week.

Friday, August 3, 2018 - Day School Component Ends
Sunday, August 5, 2018 - Boarding School Component Begins
Sunday, August 11, 2018 - Boarding School Component Ends
Thursday, August 16, 2018 - Instructor Debrief Meeting
Summer Instructors will have the following types of experience and qualifications:
A BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university; advanced degree preferred
Two or more years of teaching in the one or more of the following subjects: biology, chemistry, Chinese, English, history, learning skills, mathematics, physics, sixth grade generalist, SSAT Test Prep, writing
Two or more years of experience designing curriculum
Outstanding speaking, writing, and editing skills
Deep knowledge of the principles of teaching students
A mission-driven individual with a belief in and commitment to Oliver’s mission and values
A flexible and creative individual with the ability to find alternative ways to connect with students
Emotionally mature with a good sense of humor and the flexibility and sensitivity to work with diverse personalities and situations
A hard worker with a high energy level; a “doer” with a willingness to work hands-on in developing and executing a variety of activities
A good listener and comfortable receiving feedback
