Stone Ridge is seeking a Middle School English Language Arts Department Head to begin August 14, 2018.
Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland. With over 700 students, and rooted in the Goals of Sacred Heart education, Stone Ridge inspires young women to lead and serve, through lives of purpose that integrate faith, intellect, community, social action, and personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.
The Middle School English Language Arts Department Head is serves as the academic and pedagogical leader of the English Language Arts Department and is responsible for teaching Language Arts across grades 5 through 8, in alignment with the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education. S/he conveys information to members of the department regarding plans, curriculum development and assessment, resources, facilities, and activities. The Middle School English Language Arts Department Head observes colleagues in the department and holds department meetings, maintaining records of meetings to the Head of the Middle School upon request.Working closely with colleagues in the English Language Arts Department and throughout the Middle School, s/he creates and updates plans for content, quality, and continuity of curriculum. Actively collaborating with Learning Strategists, Educational Technologists, and the Middle School Counselor, the Middle School English Language Arts Department Head develops strategies to support all students. S/he attends all faculty and employee meetings, serves as a student Advisor, fulfills other faculty duties, and maintains good communication with families about student progress through regular progress reports and responses to parents’ inquiries.

The ideal candidate has experience teaching English at the Middle School level in independent and/or Catholic schools. S/he holds an advanced degree in a related field. S/he demonstrates expertise in pedagogy and instruction and is familiar with/has experience teaching in the model of Understanding by Design; likewise, s/he possesses a capacity for working with a range of learning abilities, and experience integrating appropriate educational technologies into her/his teaching. S/he demonstrates a collaborative spirit, excellent communication skills, and creativity.
