Blue Ridge School is an all-boys, all-boarding college preparatory school for 180 boys on a stunning 750-acre campus along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Blue Ridge is only 20 miles from Charlottesville, Virginia, a vibrant community and home to the University of Virginia.

Most teachers live on campus in residences provided by the school. On campus housing helps give our safe, family-oriented community the sense of a small village in which students and families live and work together. This Intern position will, not only be provided an apartment, but will also be required to live on-dorms and assume the responsibilities of being a dorm parent.
The role of Science Teacher Intern is a full-time, 9-month, position that has primary responsibilities to plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. A Teaching Intern is required to do a combination of co-teaching and independently teaching 3 sections of Science each day in a combination of courses that could include Environmental Science, Biology, Biology Honors, Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics and/or Integrated Sciences, as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
Develop course syllabi and lesson plans
Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
Prepare classroom for class activities
Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities
Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying learning styles
Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and resources
Use relevant technology to support instruction
Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments to include regular constructive feedback on all work and assessments
Observe, evaluate, and record each student's overall performance and development
Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students
Prepare reports and update all necessary records accurately, completely, and timely as required by school policies regarding students’ behavior and academic achievement
Manage student behavior in the classroom by consistently enforcing rules and procedures
Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school
Apply appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary
Perform certain advisory duties including but not limited to student support, counseling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement
Participate in department meetings, school meetings, and parent meetings
Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs
Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
Successfully convey to students the major concepts, principles, theories, laws and interrelationships of the field of science in which you instruct
Engages in safe, student-centered teaching methods, in numerous activities, projects, labs, and outdoor activities
Assists students in designing, conducting, reporting and evaluating investigations in science
Utilizes mathematics to process and report data, and to solve problems
Live in an on-dorm apartment assuming the responsibilities of a dorm parent.
Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations
Participates on weekday and weekend duty teams
Attends on-campus special events, such as Registration, Parents Weekend, Alumni Weekend, School sponsored mixers, etc.
Bachelors Degree or higher in a Science related field from an accredited institution
Relevant teaching experience preferred
Willingness to understand and research the benefits of single-gender education
Flexibility, creativity and willingness to play an active role in the life of the School community
Proficient use of technology in the classroom and the theory behind such use
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with students, parents, peers, and supervisors
Exceptional organizational, planning, problem solving, decision making and critical thinking skills

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
