The Managing Director of Education, directly contributes to New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) achieving its long term strategic goal of financial sustainability and fulfilling its mission of building brighter futures through ocean adventure education. This position will lead the curriculum and teaching strategies at NESS to engage students through inquiry-based educational programs resulting in non-cognitive skill growth with a lasting positive impact. The ideal candidate has taught in both traditional and informal settings is committed to experiential education. This full-time, year-round position reports to the CEO/ President.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Direction: Provide strategic direction for NESS curriculum, ensuring alignment with NESS’s mission.
Communication: Ensure all stakeholders (students, NESS employees, school administrators, teachers, NESS supporters, funding and operational partners) are fully informed of, and can articulate to others, the long-term value of non-cognitive skill development and how NESS’s experiential education programs foster development of those skills through waterfront and water-related activities.
Student Assessment Practices: Implement successful and consistent assessment practices tracking the impact of NESS’s experiential learning programs. Work with outside resources as needed to maximize this process. Analyze and communicate impact results to stakeholders.
Training and development: Train NESS Program Directors, Education Specialists, Educators, AmeriCorps members, and seasonal staff to ensure a consistent and flawless delivery of an experientially-based, safe, ‘next generation’ curriculum using on the water activities and programs to internalize non-cognitive success skills through adventure STEM/STEAM experiences.
Foster an environment of collaboration amongst those working in the education function, encouraging teamwork, innovation, and student –centered activities.
Manage staff of year-round education professionals; develop and implement comprehensive, formal and informal feedback loops resulting in increased educator proficiency and effectiveness.
Curriculum Development and Instructional Philosophy: Lead the creation of innovative, impactful, curriculum while ensuring a formalized curriculum process, allowing each NESS participant and his/her family to experience a consistent, high level of engagement and skill development.
Program Facilitation: Oversee the development and implementation of high quality inquiry-based learning environments; support program consistency across educators and locations.
Accreditation: Lead NESS’s current process of achieving NEASC accreditation and manage accreditation renewals and ongoing evaluations.
Program Evaluation: Oversee both process and outcome evaluation efforts; measure outcomes; analyze and report data; use results to inform program design; institutionalize Program Quality Assessment.
Program Management: Drive and oversee curriculum development, program development, and implementation of all educational programs at all locations including current satellite facilities and expansion of satellite locations.
Business Development & Marketing
Strategy: Articulate and advance NESS’s education philosophy; help validate NESS’s business model; espouse growth mindset principles; survey other organizations and apply best practices to NESS; assess the impact of technology on the delivery of education.
Administration: Develop and manage capital and operating budgets.
Develop and nurture senior level relationships with partner organizations, especially schools; focus on partner and customer needs; serve as NESS ambassador.
Create and foster meaningful relationships with teachers, administrators, fellow staff, and partners of NESS
Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching, Educational Leadership, or Science or related field; Advanced degree, preferred
10+ years of combined classroom teaching and program management experience
Extensive experience with positive youth engagement activities
Ability to develop and implement programs related to NESS’s creative vision, and following the latest teaching strategy research
Substantial experience and proven track record of developing and implementing outcome measurement and program quality assessment tools with excellence in staff evaluation and assessment
Teaching certification, preferred
Proven leadership skills, including setting and accomplishing goals and effectively managing diverse teams
Strong personnel management, selection, mentoring, and development skills
Knowledge of Common Core, Ocean Literacy, and Next Generation Science Standards, preferred.
Working knowledge of student-centered and inquiry-based learning, preferred
Ability to think analytically, strategically, out-of-the-box, and long term
Strong culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and customer service
Excellent presentation, oral and written communication skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Proficiency in use of technology to perform work
