The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, co-educational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full time Lower School World Music teacher to begin in August, 2018.
The Lower School Music Teacher is responsible for the development and implementation of the world music program for students in the 3’s through 2nd grade. Music at Calhoun is presented through experiential hands-on group activities. The Lower School world music program celebrates and embraces a wide range of musical genres and includes performing the music of different cultures around the world. Students explore and create through speech, singing, expressive movement and playing various percussive instruments, a strong sense of community is developed through the music program. The lower school music teacher works closely with the lower school Spanish teacher developing cross disciplinary projects and activities.
Teach world music classes and lead sing-alongs with all 3’s-2nd grade students
Collaborate with the Spanish teacher in design and implementation of integrated curriculum
Collaborate with cluster advisors and other specialist teachers to coordinate music activities as they relate to the broader life of the school
Help develop and lead building-wide assemblies and celebrations
Attend faculty meetings and conferences as needed
Keep anecdotal and assessment notes and use them to write narrative reports
Present World Music curriculum to parents on curriculum evenings
Participate fully in active life of the Lower School
A., B.S., B.F.A., or B.Mus. or equivalent degree or educational qualification from accredited college or university
Experience teaching and love of early childhood and elementary aged students
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Commitment to equity and justice, including knowledge and skills related to cultural competencies
Interest in working in a progressive and humanistic school.
Flexibility and ability to cope with change.
Wide-ranging intellectual and educational interests and ability to commit to creative, integrated curriculum
Experience with and/or certified in Orff-Schulwerk, Kodály, or Dalcroze approach
Experience with or an appreciation of progressive education
