The Chair of the JK-12 Social Studies Department collaborates with the Heads of the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, the Dean of Faculty, the Dean of Studies and the Head of School in the development and delivery of mission-aligned curriculum and teaching practices. The department chair is responsible for leading the successful implementation of high-quality educational programs and managing the professional performance of the faculty in his or her department.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Work towards the successful implementation of the school’s strategic plan
Demonstrate leadership through active collaboration and sound decision-making
Demonstrate personal resilience and cultural competence
Communicate clearly to a variety of audiences
Manage the support and development of departmental faculty, per the Guide to Performance Management
Allocate departmental resources for professional development and curricular needs
Serve on the hiring committee for departmental faculty
Coordinate the scope and sequence of academic coursework, class content, teaching methodologies, departmental philosophies, material used, means of assessment and teacher placement within the department
Ensure proper placement of students in department courses/levels
Work with parents, faculty, and division heads when academic concerns arise regarding students
Hold regularly scheduled departmental meetings
Prepare an annual departmental budget
Teach three sections
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
A strong background in curriculum and instruction
Outstanding teaching skills
Outstanding leadership skills
Clear written and oral communication skills
Excellent organization skills
Proven success at working collaboratively in educational leadership
