Maybeck High School, a small, independent, teacher-run, college-preparatory high school in Berkeley, is seeking an Academic Dean. The Dean's primary duties include: working with faculty to shape Maybeck's curriculum, acting as an academic advisor to Maybeck's students, communicating frequently with parents, hiring faculty, and teaching classes. The person in this position must be very organized, have strong writing skills, and be able to communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents. Teaching experience required.
Oversee the school’s academic program with Director and Educational Program Committee
Work with faculty and Directory to determine courses offered each year, distributing teaching load among faculty
Advise and direct students on all aspects of class selection and placement, graduation and college admission requirements, remediation of courses, and strategies for academic success
Chair Educational Program Committee, including overseeing and reviewing the school’s yearly academic program, course offerings, seminar classes, school trips, summer reading, academic policies, and student clubs; weekly reports at Wednesday meetings
Facilitate Monday meetings and follow up as needed with teachers, students, families
Vet, interview, and hire faculty and staff with Director
Direct and oversee WASC accreditation process
Work with Registrar in creating the class schedule each year, providing information and advice about students’ course selections, academic needs, and paths to graduation
Assist with admissions: Q&A panels at open houses, consultation regarding academic preparedness for Maybeck’s program, and other admissions work
Submit courses created and designed by teachers for UC approval; keep track of and remind teachers of dates and deadlines
Oversee community service requirement for all students
Oversee and coordinate accommodations for students with learning disabilities with Psychological Counselor
Oversee NCAA course eligibility
Teach at two academic classes
Meet often with parents to discuss student work
Communicate frequently with parents, staff, and students about student progress at Maybeck
Work with parents to counsel out students as needed
Help plan and oversee Spring and Fall New Family Orientations
Visit classrooms to be familiar with academic offerings
Meet with faculty to discuss teaching and student relationships
Expect either to be here early to open the school in the morning or to stay in the afternoon to close it at 5 PM.
Requirements: Genuine excitement about working in an independent school, a strong commitment to working closely with students, a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in education, a bachelor's degree, relevant experience, and a desire to participate in a teacher-led school. Advanced degrees are preferred, as is the ability to teach across a variety of subject areas.
