Milton Academy, established in 1798, is an independent coeducational national boarding and day school, serving 1,000 students in grades K-12, on a 125-acre campus eight miles south of Boston.
Milton Academy is seeking an Upper School speech and debate coach for a full-time position beginning in September 2018.
Responsibilities include recruiting and training students interested in competitive speech and debate; conducting individual and group practices for students of all abilities during the school day, in the afternoon, and in the evening; chaperoning students, judging, and representing Milton Academy at local, regional, and national tournaments; coordinating registration, travel, and volunteer judges for tournaments; assisting with budget management; communicating with students, parents, alumni, and administrators; and making positive contributions to the speech and debate program for grades 7-12. Additional responsibilities may include teaching several sections of a current events and public speaking course.
The successful candidate will have a record of success coaching all NSDA and CFL events, with particular emphasis on public address and limited preparation events. Knowledge of a variety of debate styles, including parliamentary debate, is preferred. In addition, the successful candidate will be dynamic, energetic, creative, collaborative and engaging. The candidate will also possess a lively interest in pedagogy and a commitment to the highest intellectual, artistic, and ethical standards. A bachelor’s degree in a related field and a valid driving license are required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Teacher certification is not required. Demonstrated ability working in a diverse community is essential.
All teachers advise 6-8 students. Teachers are also expected to advise a student activity or coach a team or intramural sport, in addition to other responsibilities. Faculty members residing on campus typically live and work in a dormitory and all teachers living on campus have responsibilities in the residential program.
