Whitby seeks an experienced, thoughtful science teacher to join our middle school team of passionate educators in grades 5-8. We strive to provide excellent science instruction across a broad array of disciplines to students with a diverse range of abilities and passions.
At Whitby, students are active participants who drive the learning process through inquiry and reflection. In order to help students engage to their fullest potential, the science department employs a holistic approach, committed to helping all students discover not only the skills, concepts and broader ideas surrounding learning and practicing science, but also who they are as learners and as people.
Science classes focus on inquiring and designing, knowing and understanding, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Ideas formed in science classes are rooted in a deep conceptual framework and placed within larger global contexts to help students make sense of the world around them.
Students learn about science and how to be scientists through a range of carefully designed lessons, activities and explorations that take advantage of our dedicated science labs. Students routinely process and evaluate data that is collected as part of both prepared and self-designed experiments, and also focus on the presentation and communication of data collected and evaluations made. Peer and self-assessment, as well as teacher conferencing, are a key component of our program.
A willingness to share and listen with colleagues, respect and trust when working with others, and a passion for science and science teaching are a must.
REQUIREMENTS: • Holds a college degree in elementary/secondary education or a related field • Has a minimum of three years experience teaching science in an upper elementary or middle school setting • While not essential, IBMYP experience would be a plus • Willingness to engage in IBMYP training and professional development both inside and outside of the regular teacher calendar • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment background check
