Responsibilities: The Middle School ELL specialist teacher works individually and in small groups with students who are continuing to develop and refine their English language skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening. The ELL specialist assesses students’ English proficiency, sets instructional goals, monitors student progress and communicates regularly with students’ families. The ELL specialist also works closely with classroom teachers, coaching them in instructional strategies and co-planning appropriate curriculum modifications. The ELL work with students occurs primarily during the school day; some before- and after-school support might be included, based on the needs of the students. The Middle School ELL Specialist works in consultation with the high school ELL teacher to plan events that support ELL families, to prepare middle school ELL students for our high school program, and to ensure appropriate support as students move into high school.
The ELL specialist will also have teaching responsibilities in the middle school and/or serve as part of a grade-level team. The additional responsibilities will be determined based on the background and experience of the successful candidate, in consultation with the successful candidate.
Qualifications: The successful candidate holds certification in ELL instruction to non-native speakers, as well as has experience in this field. S/he has knowledge of best practices in the field, as well as proven ability to coach classroom teachers in incorporating effective strategies into their instruction. The candidate will have knowledge of instructional resources and facility with technology, including the Microsoft Office suite. In addition, the candidate is passionate about middle-level education, has proven success at working with adolescents and places a high value on a collaborative, supportive and enriching environment for both students and adults.
