Summary: Waring’s College Counselor works closely with Waring’s students, families and faculty in all areas of college admissions support.
Key Responsibilities include:
Guide students and families through all aspects of the college admissions process, interfacing with key members of Waring Staff, from Waring’s Academic Administrator and School Leadership, to individual faculty members, as appropriate.
Manage and update Waring’s College Counseling Handbook and web content.
Plan and facilitate the visits/sessions with College Reps (typically 20-30/year in the fall); maintain strong relationships with Area Reps.
Guide students in the teacher recommendation process.
Meet with each college-bound student as needed throughout the process.
Facilitate/gather input (from the student, his/her teachers, and parents) for Waring’s “Counselor Recommendations” and draft each letter in consult with the Head of School.
Lead information sessions for parents and students at appropriate times during the year.
Arrange a panel session for recent Waring alumni to mentor juniors and seniors in the process.
Invite outside experts to give presentations on the process as appropriate, publicizing outside opportunities for families as well.
3-5 years’ experience related to college counseling
Flexibility and willingness to perform many different functions.
Dexterity with Google Docs.
Understanding of basic principles of writing, journalism, and copy-editing.
Ability to think critically, strategically, and creatively.
Ability to effectively interface with constituents of a school environment including faculty, staff, students, board members, alumni and parents. Skilled in diplomacy, and tact, uses good discretion, and is able to maintain confidentiality.
