The IDEAL School of Manhattan is seeking a talented, warm, and creative Lower School co-teacher with a background in Special Education or as a Learning Specialist. Lower School faculty at IDEAL work in an integrated co-teaching model, with one general and one special educator partnering to provide a student-centered, project-based, collaborative, and rigorous educational experience within the context of an inclusion classroom. The co-teaching model of IDEAL’s Lower School ensures a low student-teacher ratio and allows teachers to differentiate the curriculum and organize flexible groups and to challenge, inspire, and support all learners in the classroom. All applicants must have a commitment to inclusion practices. Some classrooms also have an Associate Teacher in the classroom, directly supporting a student in the school’s Dylan program and also playing a supporting role in the larger classroom.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Possess a commitment to inclusive education, and be able to inspire, nurture, and challenge students with a range of interests, experiences, abilities, and learning styles
Demonstrate a passion for knowing and growing Lower School students in and out of the classroom
Reflect a commitment to cultivating the curiosity, grit, communication, voice empathy, and confidence, as well as the academic skills, of young learners
Be skilled in differentiating curriculum and assignments through flexible groupings, formative assessments, scaffolded assignments, and clear goal-setting
Possess an exceptional understanding of how to adapt curriculum to build upon the strengths of students and to advance their learning
Integrate projects grounded in social justice to foster empathy, critical thinking, and perspective-taking skills of students
Champion the role of project-based learning within a differentiated framework
Possess a strong understanding of the essential literacy, math, and social studies skills to be developed throughout Lower School
Take initiative and follow through on work
Seek out new and innovative curricula, texts, and technological applications for incorporation into instruction.
