Indian Creek School is an independent coeducational day school offering a broad curriculum in the liberal arts. Founded in 1973, Indian Creek School enrolls approximately 550 students in grades Pre-K through twelve from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and economic backgrounds. This position is a full-time or nearly full-time, 10 month, faculty position, reporting to the Head of the Lower School.
Develop and lead a dynamic, contemporary, multi-cultural and developmentally appropriate music curriculum and program that successfully blends instrumental, vocal, and movement
Implement a curriculum based in music literacy and instrumental knowledge
Teach music and movement classes for PK-3rd grade students; delivery of the curriculum through classroom teaching and school performances; develop concerts and performances that demonstrate student proficiency and reflect the curriculum
Teach instrumental music to grades 3-6; control the storage and use of school-owned instruments; make minor adjustments and request repairs for instruments as required
Work with the Head of the Lower School to ensure high quality music education and the most engaging experience for students;
Collaborate with Upper School instrumental music teacher to ensure basic skills and a smooth transition to the Upper School program
Advance musical literacy by integrating creative movement, dance, song, vocal technique, listening, pitched and non-pitched percussion, ensemble, music literacy, recorder skills, solfege, and multicultural approaches;
Assist teachers in incorporating music and movement into their classroom culture, unit plans, and daily lesson plans;
Provide varied and appropriate musical programs for a variety of school events including concerts, Open Houses, etc.
Collaboratively plan and implement interdisciplinary units with teachers or grade level teams;
Use a variety of assessments to measure student learning and drive instruction;
Maintain positive relationships with students and staff;
Maintain confidentiality with student information and records;
Create a positive and safe classroom culture and community;
Report progress to families through narrative progress reports;
Supervise and support arts initiatives within the school;
Actively participate in a professional learning community, including professional literature, peer coaching, reflection meetings, planning meetings, data meetings, and staff meetings;
Assist with all–school operations as needed (e.g. supervise lunch and recess)
Must have experience with multiple music education philosophies to facilitate development of music curricula;
High degree of proficiency with a variety of musical genres, contemporary music, and non-western music;
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with classroom teachers to develop interdisciplinary units combining music and movement and core subject material;
Educational philosophy aligns with the mission and vision of Indian Creek School;
Basic keyboard skills;
Ability to teach band;
Preferred: Ability to teach strings
Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Music Education, emphasis in music education required;
Preferred: Certification in Music;
Preferred: additional certification or educational specialization in such areas vocal, instrumental and movement such as Orff, Kodaly, and/or Dalcroze methods and/or creative movement for young children;
Strong interpersonal skills;
Strong written and oral communication skills;
Reflective practitioner in a state of constant professional growth and a willingness to share their craft with others;
Keep self and organization current with arts education practices;
Seek and coordinate partnerships with organizations that contribute to our commitment to arts education;
Plan and implement professional development for teachers, focusing on music and movement.
Classroom environment with no secretarial/administrative support.
School environment including indoor and outdoor activities.
Operate office equipment including keyboarding;
Handle, carry and manipulate small musical instruments;
Read handwritten documents and other records or reports;
Exchange information in person or on the telephone;
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time;
Some light lifting, carrying, bending.
