Friends' Central School, an independent, coeducational, Quaker day school founded in 1845 and serving around 800 students in Nursery through grade 12, seeks a full-time Lower School Learning Specialist to support the academic needs of students in Kindergarten through grade 5. The Learning Specialist will also work with faculty and parents serving as a resource and will be a part of the Support Services Team. The School seeks candidates who are dedicated, knowledgeable, and have an understanding of the unique developmental stages of Lower School students.

Work collaboratively with the Principals, Counselor, K-2 Reading Specialist, and Nurses to assist students with support needs
Teach and work with students in grades K-5 as needed, and in cooperation with lead teachers, in the areas of reading, math, and executive functioning when specific learning needs arise
In conjunction with Assistant Principal and Lower School Counselor, read psychological evaluations on current students to aid teachers, parents, and support staff in meeting the needs of our students
In collaboration with teachers and the Student Support Services team, write, maintain and update student Educational Plans and ensure accommodations are being carried out to meet students’ needs ? Attend conferences on students with academic concerns
Help teachers develop specific strategies to enable students to learn more effectively in the classroom in grades K-5
Participate in divisional student support meetings to help identify strategies to support their needs ? Seek ongoing professional development in relevant learning support areas
Communicate and consult with outside support providers, including MCIU and psychologists engaged in testing, regarding students experiencing academic challenges
Present to faculty and parents on topics related to learning and intervention.
Participate in assessment of current language arts and math curricula on an ongoing basis and serve on research committees
Attend faculty meetings, required training, and after-school events as appropriate
Reports to Lower School Principal
5-10 years’ experience working with Lower School-aged students (ages 3-11)
Ability to work collaboratively on a team Education
Degree in Special Education and MA degree in Education field required
