The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, a K-8 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a dynamic Math teacher and extension specialist. This position will be responsible for the coordination and execution of math-related programming, including competition, clubs, and extension, a well as the development and instruction of mathematics in the 5th grade. The math teacher/specialist reports directly to the Head of the Upper School.
Initiates and leads Math related electives, clubs and competitions across the Upper
School. Experience in this area is required.
Teaches five classes per six-day cycle to two different sections of 5th Grade Math. Acts as
an extension and support to 7th and 8th grade math classes once a cycle.
Teaches mathematics with 4th grade four times a cycle.
Focuses on transition between the Lower School program and the Connected Math
program in the Upper School.
Focuses on development of not only algorithmic understanding, but also deeper
conceptual problem-solving comprehension.
Uses mathematics to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.
• Serves as an advisor for approximately seven students. Responsibilities include
advocating for the students, communicating with parents about advisees’ progress, guiding advisees through daily school life, sharing information, and leading discussions.
Attends regular guidance meetings for Grades 4 and 5 with student support teams to
discuss student concerns.
Collaborates with the 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Math teachers and Upper School Learning
Specialists to coordinate a clear scope and sequence from grade to grade in terms of both subject matter and skill development.
Leads parent/teacher conferences twice yearly.
Writes comments twice yearly for students in Grades 5.
Is proactive and consistent in parent communication.
Attends Wednesday afternoon meetings.
Accompanies Upper School on an overnight trip in the fall.
Is available for other school events and activities as needed.
