Reports To: Physical Education Department Chair, Director of Athletics and Head of Middle School

Established in 1920, Bentley School is a K-12 co-educational, independent day school located on two campuses in Oakland and Lafayette. Consistent with the school’s mission, athletics is another venue for teaching and learning. The focus of the Bentley School Athletics Department is to enrich the mental, emotional and physical well being of every student-athlete. We provide opportunities for competition in which the lifetime values of sportsmanship, teamwork, individual effort, integrity, work ethic, commitment, and self-discipline are emphasized.
Plan and teach all middle school Physical Education
Contribute to curriculum development and pedagogy; work closely with K-5 Physical Education Department and teachers to develop cohesive program.
Work with PE Department Chair & Director of Athletics to coordinate Upper School gym and field space for middle school PE classes.
Work with Department Chair & Athletic Director to schedule bus transportation for all off-campus Physical Education classes.
Manage Physical Education equipment inventory.
Attend faculty & staff meetings.
Coach 3-seasons of sport in Athletic Department – fall, winter and spring.
Participate in all aspects of faculty and student life at Bentley School.
Attend other related school events.
Participate in the annual grade level trips.
Attend middle school athletic events, including games, practices and other team events.
Actively support department mission, school philosophy, community and policies.
Ability and willingness to work with students in many different contexts (in PE class, on the sports fields, in advisory groups).
Other duties related to interscholastic athletics as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Other duties related to Middle School faculty position as assigned by the Head of Middle School.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physical Education or related field.
Minimum 3 to 5 years of teaching and coaching experience, preferably in an independent school.
Demonstrated successful teaching of physical education and coaching of sport, and commitment to the success of student-athletes.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, a desire to become part of the larger school athletic community, and ability to work collaboratively as a team member.
