The Purnell School seeks a full time learning specialist to provide individualized and small group instruction to students in grades 9 - 12 and to support organization and study skills and writing instruction across the curriculum. Learning Specialists at Purnell are part of our Learning & Wellness Team, which facilitates our student-centered and holistic approach to adolescent girls’ education and well-being.
Support the mission of the Purnell School to teach girls who learn differently to grow intellectually and flourish personally.
Share a developmental and life-span approach to all learning and growth, including for people with learning differences.
Have a deep understanding of the complexity of learning differences for students in high school and their impact on academic demands.
Provide effective and supportive instruction for students with diverse learning profiles including learning disabilities and ADHD and weakness in executive functioning.
Work collaboratively with faculty and administrators.
Demonstrate a sincere interest in teaching and learning and a positive growth mindset.
Maintain accurate and complete records of instructional strategies and student progress
Attend professional development conferences/seminars to further enhance professional knowledge.
Provide support to 3-4 students as their Advisor, the main communicative link between students and their families.
Contribute to the life of the school outside the classroom.
Most faculty live in campus housing or in the dormitory as a hall parent. All faculty are required to be part of the rotational weekend team approximately 8 weekends throughout the school year to provide supervision.
Successful candidates will possess at least a bachelor’s degree in special education and/or a related field. Minimally, 3 years of experience in a secondary school setting with students in these grades is ideal. Interest in and commitment to learning differences and girls’ education are a plus. Salary will be commensurate with experience and education.
