Winchester Thurston School, an innovative Pre-K through grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, seeks a dynamic and experienced Director of Library and Information Services/Upper School Librarian who will provide leadership and vision for all aspects of library programs and facilities. This position requires an energetic individual who will embrace both the challenges and opportunities of ensuring that the library’s academic and technology resources complement, enhance, and extend the school’s educational program. A successful candidate will be a creative and collaborative professional who will build strong relationships with the library staff, students and colleagues. The Director of Library and Information Services performs under the general direction of the Head of School and the supervision of the Director of Upper School.
Ensure that the divisional libraries’ academic and technical resources advance the school’s educational program
Collaborate with Division Directors and faculty members on specific needs and growth opportunities
Develop policies and programming that establish standards for and definitions of information literacy and bolster support for library services that contribute to an information-literate student body
Foster an environment of creativity and innovation as well as a love of reading and learning
Research and evaluate new and emerging information technologies in collaboration with the Director of eLearning
Oversee the library budget
Develop, acquire, and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the students, the instructional strategies of the school’s faculty, and the school’s mission
Maintain an attractive, dynamic, current and well-stocked library conducive to reading, studying and research
Select, process and make readily available a variety of resources, including print, digital and multimedia
Maintain a circulation system that ensures the prompt return of materials and their ready availability to other borrowers
Maintain records in Pennsylvania State union catalog; supervise interlibrary loan
Provide bibliographic and reference services for teacher and students
Provide instruction for students in the use of library resources
Promote the ethical use of information
Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and knowledgeable researchers
Participate in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of other library professionals, including working with the Dean of Faculty to observe and evaluate them.
Serve as Chair of the Library and Information Services Department
Act as an advocate of the libraries, sharing expertise at faculty meetings and serving on academic committees
Perform other duties as assigned
A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Studies, or a similar field is preferred along with 5+ years of experience in library program management. Demonstrated success in collaborating with faculty across all disciplines to enable/enhance student learning is necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. The ideal candidate will have supervisory experience, strong interpersonal skills, be detail-oriented, and have exceptional organizational skills. He/she will be committed to life-long learning and passionate about working with and inspiring students.
