The Calhoun School, a progressive independent school located on Manhattan's Upper West Side, is seeking a full-time permanent Middle School Science Teacher starting August 2018.
The successful candidate will have a passion for working with Middle School students in an innovative, supportive environment. Teaching and learning begin with the needs, interests, questions and diverse life experiences of the individual. Calhoun is committed to developing a sense of empathy, equity and justice among students. The Middle School Science Teacher reports directly to the Director of the Middle School.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Develop lesson plans and teach 6th Grade Earth Science.
Cultivate a love of science through interactive, joyful learning.
Provide differentiated and small group instruction based on the preferred learning modalities of students.
Create a positive learning environment for students and inspire students to hold themselves to a high standard of academics and character.
Maintain anecdotal and assessment records to inform thoughtful, comprehensive narrative reports.
Serve as an advisor to a small group of middle school students
Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and ensure student progress.
Attend weekly faculty meetings and conferences for professional growth.
Maintain consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferences.
Participate in parent/teacher meetings.
Strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with Calhoun’s mission and values.
High level of professionalism.
Be open to chaperoning events, planning field trips, sponsoring student clubs
Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of science.
Interest in working in a progressive and humanistic school.

Flexibility and ability to cope with change.
Bachelor’s degree in related field
