Reporting to the Director of College Counseling, the College Counselor/Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling is responsible for helping students identify and apply to colleges that are well suited to their interests and abilities.
Primary responsibilities include the following:
Counseling approximately half the class (average class size 60 students), beginning in the junior year. This includes advising students individually on all aspects of the college process such as course selection, building an appropriately balanced college list, helping students prepare application materials, recommending campus visit programs and scholarships, and informing them about financial aid
Supporting and informing parents through individual meetings and communication
Writing letters of recommendation for assigned counselees
Teaching the College Counseling Seminar course to juniors and seniors
Keeping current on trends in college admissions, in part by participating in local and national associations relevant to our profession, including NACAC, NEACAC, College Board and ACCIS
Work collaboratively with Director of College Counseling and take on special projects and assignments as determined by the Director
Fostering and maintaining relationships with college admissions representatives by hosting visits to Walker’s, traveling to college campuses, and attending professional meetings and conferences
Assisting with the coordination of PSAT and SAT testing on campus
Helping to organize college-related events including the annual College Counseling program for juniors and families in February, a financing higher education workshop, a college fair, and presentations on topics relevant to special populations like athletes, artists, and international students
In addition, the successful candidate will serve as an academic advisor for up to six students, attend required day and evening events including school meetings, banquets, concerts and community dinners, participate in assigned weekend team duties, and obtain driver’s license endorsement A in order to drive activities vehicle. Additionally, candidates must exhibit a high degree of flexibility and adaptability and carry out other duties as assigned
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree; compelling college guidance or college admissions experience; excellent interpersonal and communication skills (especially writing); strong organizational and time management skills; sound judgement and discretion; a sincere desire to advocate for students; a commitment to professional growth; and a sense of humor.
