The Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain – a co-educational, independent school with approximately 520 students in preschool through grade eight – is seeking a health and fitness teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. Located in beautiful Summerlin near the entrance to Red Rock Natural Preserve and about 20 minutes from downtown Las Vegas, Alexander Dawson’s education reflects its Core Beliefs.
The candidate is responsible for the general supervision and management of the health and fitness classes for grades one through eight, as well as the planning and execution of an educational program that balances social-emotional learning experiences and physical fitness goals. The candidate will be a member of a five-person health and fitness team that works closely to ensure each child’s success and engagement. The candidate will also work collaboratively with classroom teachers and administrators on curriculum development and the integration of best practices. This position begins on August 2, 2018.
Essential Functions: The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Commits to cultural competency and responsiveness. • Implements a comprehensive health and fitness curriculum based on best practices and national standards.
Plans for lessons that have clear goals and outcomes. Uses assessments to inform planning and instruction. Participates in Understanding by Design training and writes lesson plans using this format.
Keeps observational notes on students to write student reports and maintains an organized record keeping system, including student portfolios.
Writes mid-year and end-of-the-year progress report for each student.
Communicates regularly with parents via classroom newsletters, website updates and phone/e-mail conversations regarding individual observations or concerns.
Works with the school counselor, Coordinator of Student Services, Curriculum and Instruction Specialist, Teaching and Learning Specialist, and Director of Student Life and Diversity to aid students in achieving the maximum development and growth, both within and beyond the classroom. This is achieved through the observations of students' behaviors and needs, consultations with the counselor, and referrals when indicated.
Purchases and maintain the materials used in the Athletics Department, as well as securing equipment in storage on a daily basis.
Assists in the coordination of school-wide community building events such as pep rallies, field day, athletic events and sports banquets.
Performs additional duties such as advising a club, chaperoning events or coaching a sport as needed.
Teaches a middle-school human growth and development course.
Adapts teaching to the individualized and differentiated needs of each child.
Works cooperatively and effectively as a team member within the context of a continuous program, preschool through eighth grade.

Required Education, Training & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field from a four-year college or university required
Master’s degree preferred
Three-plus years of combined teaching experience in an elementary setting
Experience in developing and writing curriculum
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Expertise in best practices for early childhood education
Familiarity with current learning theories, basic principles of human growth and development, and the ability to consider them in the design and implementation of learning experiences
Knowledge of current trends and research in learning and assessment
Ability to manage non-instructional human dynamics in an educational setting
Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the children and program
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to maintain confidential information

The Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain is a coeducational, nondenominational, independent day school for college-bound students in preschool (age 3) through Middle School (8th grade).
