Lake Tahoe School was originally founded under the name Incline Academy in 1997 as a Pre-Kindergarten through First Grade private school whose mission was to provide a carefully articulated, highly academic program. Over the five-year period from September 1997 through June 2001, the Incline Academy, adding grades yearly, evolved into a Pre-K through Eighth Grade school housed in Incline Village’s Foursquare Church.
Incline Academy became Lake Tahoe School in 2002. At that time, a visionary board of trustees, acquired a new three-story building with room for 24 classrooms and appreciable office space in 2003. That same year Mr. Eric Swain, an experienced Head of School in both East and West Coast institutions, was hired as Lake Tahoe School’s new Head. In the spring of 2004 Dr. Arnold Lipkind, an educator with some 35 years experience became the principal. During this period the school continued to grow, develop curriculum and enrichment programs (e.g., its much-lauded outdoor education program), and attract exceptional faculty and staff.
In the spring of 2011 Mrs. Ruth Huyler Glass was appointed the new Head of School. Mrs. Glass’s career as an educator and leader in independent schools has provided a wealth of experience and expertise essential to running a great school: faculty recruitment, management and development; curriculum design and implementation; budgeting; admissions; and fundraising. Mrs. Glass will be retiring at the end of June, 2018. Lake Tahoe School will be hiring an interim Head for the 2018-2019 school year.
Lake Tahoe School is currently accredited by, The Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS), based in Seattle Washington, which is the chief accrediting organization for private schools in the northwestern United States and a regional affiliate of the National Association of Independent Schools.
Lake Tahoe School continues to evolve: student enrollment continues to increase; the Board recently agreed to a campus renovation and expansion plan; and they are successfully meeting their impressive fundraising goals.
The future is bright, and the founding vision of creating an educational community focused on honoring the individual creativity and passion inherent in every child continues to nurture Lake Tahoe School students with disciplined minds, strong character, healthy bodies, and creative spirits.
The faculty strive individually and collectively at Lake Tahoe School to bring fun back to learning, to engage students in active learning, and to partner with students and parents in the delivery of an exceptionally thoughtful, appropriately rigorous, and, yes, fun academic course of studies.
In keeping with their mission to instill a lifelong love of learning and develop critical thinkers and articulate, confident leaders for the 21st Century, the School strives to – and succeed in – balancing levity with intensity in everything they do in the classroom. They take the important task of preparing students for success at the high school level and beyond very seriously, and work intentionally and collaboratively to develop and refine their curricular scope and sequence.
At the core of Lake Tahoe School’s programs is a highly dedicated team of teachers, administrators and staff totaling 29 professionals (44% hold advanced degrees) with an average of 10 years teaching experience. The student: teacher ratio is 6 to 1 with an average class size of 14.
Lake Tahoe School is fortunate to have an outstanding Board of Trustees, steadfastly dedicated to creating a superlative independent school in the Lake Tahoe region. Lake Tahoe School’s trustees represent a balance of skills, interests, and experience that together provide an essential environment of effective governance and a philosophical foundation for the future growth and success of the school.
