Winchester Thurston School (WT), an innovative Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, announces a search for a full-time Upper School Academic Support Coordinator for the 2018-19 school year. The Upper School Academic Support Coordinator provides instruction for students in grades 9 through 12 who have been identified as needing instructional support with executive functioning, including but not limited to, organization, time management, and study skills.
The individual in this position will work closely with the Upper School Division Director, other Upper School faculty members, students, and parents. In addition, the Upper School Academic Support Coordinator must work as a team member with the Academic Support team and the Director of Student Support Services. This individual will model ethical and professional development, enforce school rules, and be able to maintain confidentiality. In particular, the Upper School Academic Support Coordinator is responsible for the following tasks:
Work with individuals and small groups to provide instructional support to students to help them develop executive function skills such as organization, time management and study skills
Advocate for academic support students, communicating clearly, supportively, and effectively with classroom teachers and administrators
Coordinate with regular classroom teachers to help implement testing accommodations and assist with the implementation of accommodation plans for students
Maintain and update the student accommodations list and keep teachers informed of the accommodations as noted in the students’ written plans
Coordinate with any Upper School students on medical leave, providing a schedule of work and deadlines while on leave and creating a plan for transitioning back to school
Work as a team member with teaching colleagues and administrators by attending all department meetings, Upper School faculty meetings and in-service days, and serving on committees as needed
Communicate with parents in an effective and timely manner to inform them about student progress within the academic support program
Commit to ongoing professional growth by participating in the school’s formative development process
Fulfill assigned duties that are connected with non-academic responsibilities, e.g., proctor study halls, serve as advisor for students within the advisory program, serve on school-wide or division-wide committees, etc.
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree and 3 – 5 years of teaching or instructional support experience in secondary school
Knowledge of learning differences, multimodal teaching strategies, strategies for teaching executive functioning skills, such as organizational skills, study skills, and time management, and utilizing different teaching styles
Ability to work in one-on-one and small group settings to remediate academic skill deficits
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, other faculty members, and administrators
