Middle School 6th Grade Humanities Teacher (one-year position)
The Blake School
July 3, 2018
Full Time - Faculty
The Blake School seeks an engaging sixth-grade humanities teacher who is eager to help students construct their own meanings as they learn to read, write, research and collaborate with imagination, passion, and insight. This is a one-year position. The humanities team works closely to design units, activities, and lessons that develop foundational skills for learning and inquiry that will support and inspire students throughout middle school and beyond. Teachers integrate reading and writing workshop sessions with four inquiry strands that include such topics as the groups to which we belong, peace and conflict, sustainable development, and human rights. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience, and thinking that makes a community strong and empowers students to engage across differences. Blake welcomes applicants from all schools, public and private, as well as colleges and universities.
The successful applicant will have at least a bachelor's degree in English or history.
Middle school teaching experience is preferred, as is a demonstrated understanding of and appreciation for young adolescents. The candidate must be able to work with students who vary in ability and learning styles, both nurturing and challenging as necessary, and have experience instructing diverse populations of students.
Ideally, candidates will have some experience in shaping an integrated language arts/social studies curriculum at the middle school level.
References should address the candidate's ability to instruct successfully a wide range of students and to work collaboratively and harmoniously with other adults in an educational setting.
The Blake School believes that a diverse society enriches all individuals and communities. Diversity of race, ethnicity, national origin, geography, religion, gender, affectional or sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and marital, parental or economic status forms the fabric of our society. As a result of these beliefs, The Blake School actively seeks students, families and employees who value and contribute to the fullness of a diverse community within the context of its mission. In doing so, we recognize our responsibility to help make each person's experience a success. EOE
