The Director of Counseling Services responds to individual students’ emotional needs and helps maintain a healthy, productive, and safe school community in which day and boarding students can realize their full potential. The Director uses his or her expertise and utilizes resources both within and outside the School to evaluate students who are dealing with emotional concerns or significant mental health issues and to coordinate appropriate support and treatment. The Director also proactively educates members of the school community about issues related to child and adolescent development. The Director of Counseling Services reports to the Associate Head of School. This is a full-time, school-year position and is eligible for benefits.
Evaluating students who are at-risk or in crisis, making recommendations for acute and long-term care, and referring to outside mental health professionals;
Managing student cases, coordinating comprehensive treatment plans, and maintaining communication with parents and key individuals at school;
Providing short-term counseling for students who need guidance and support;
Consulting and collaborating with colleagues and supervisors, including division heads, the Director of Learning Services, and the Director of Admission;
Managing relationships with outside health providers and acting as the School’s liaison;
Educating students, faculty, and parents about issues related to child and adolescent development through classes, meetings, and special programs.
The Director of Counseling Services must be professionally qualified and experienced in identifying and responding to students who exhibit emotional, psychological, and behavioral distress outside the range of normal child and adolescent development. Significant experience as a counselor or therapist in a school setting is essential, and work in a boarding school is beneficial. The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in school counseling, psychology, or social work. A valid Massachusetts professional license in counseling or mental health counseling is required.
