Job Description: Miss Porter’s School seeks an experienced and empathetic mental health professional to serve as the Assistant Director of Counseling. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Counseling and provides the necessary counseling interventions appropriate in an all-girls boarding school setting. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Counseling and the Director of Health Services to provide students with health and mental health counseling services as part of an integrated clinical team. The ideal candidate will provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, prevention services, and teach in the social and emotional learning program. The Assistant Director should be a skilled, creative, flexible, and approachable person with whom teenage girls connect easily. Candidates are expected to be committed to equity and inclusion, as they serve a diverse student body and school community.
Clinical Assist Director of Counseling in providing 24/7 counseling service to students. (On-call hours required.) Provide individual and group counseling to students and make appropriate referrals to local therapists and school consulting psychiatrist as needed. Effectively manage crisis situations and make clinical recommendations for appropriate level of follow up care. This may include accompanying a student in crisis to the Emergency Room. Support and develop student leadership programs and groups to promote health and wellness as well as enhance student connection with the Counseling Center. Maintain close connections with the Director of Counseling, Director of Health Services, and Dean of Students, families, faculty, staff and outside treatment providers regarding student mental health concerns. Facilitate mediations with students to help resolve roommate/peer conflicts. Effectively build strong and trusting rapport with students, families, faculty, and administration to provide excellent care for students.
Educational Collaborate with Director of Counseling to train faculty and staff regarding pertinent mental health issues and social-emotional skills. Develop innovative and creative mental health and wellness programs for school community. Effectively partner with the Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer to ensure all students feel supported and successful.
Administrative Maintain records on all student counseling sessions. Collaborate with Director of Counseling and Director of Health Services in the development of policies and protocols.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or other mental health related field. Five years of direct counseling and crisis management experience. Five years of designing and implementing successful mental health programs in a school, educational, or mental-health care setting. Must be a licensed mental health provider. Should hold a Connecticut State license or be in the process of obtaining it. Demonstrated commitment to serving a diverse student body and collaborating with a community that highly values equity and inclusion.
