General Summary: Leads and fosters a positive and safe learning environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, faculty, staff, and parents at USM by helping direct, counsel, and supervise a variety of educational programs. Fosters teamwork between faculty and staff to promote a school culture that is inclusive and responsive. Supports the Middle School educational program designed to support the academic, social, and emotional development of each student in alignment with the School’s mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Acts as the instructional leader of the division to promote the academic development of students in a challenging and supportive school environment.
Leads, plans, and articulates the division’s programs, curriculum, schedule, calendar, objectives, expectations, behavioral guidelines, special events, and vision.
Assumes the responsibility for smooth day-to-day operations in the Middle School.
Promotes and supports positive student behavior in alignment with the School’s Common Trust, and oversees the student discipline process.
Supports the distinctive learning that occurs through athletics, the arts, service, and extra-curricular activities, coordinating with the appropriate academic program.
Analyses student performance data, and provides timely and effective learning support to determine ways to improve instruction and student learning in cooperation with the Learning Center, tutors, counselors, faculty, and advisors.
Monitors the quality of classroom instruction.
Provides creative leadership in developing and implementing and delivering instructional strategies, as well as other programs and services for diverse learners intended to build a positive and productive school climate conducive to learning.
Makes recommendations to the Head of School and HR for the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty and staff.
Supervises and evaluates the Middle School faculty and staff.
Assists in the admission process for the selection of mission-appropriate students.
Keeps abreast of current research, innovations, and trends in the areas of curriculum and instruction and provides pertinent information and recommendations.
Oversees the optimization and planning of the Middle School operating budget.
Fosters a positive school climate and staff morale through positive feedback and recognition.
Promotes a safe and healthy school environment. Responds to crises when necessary.
Creates effective parent, faculty, and student communications. Responds to community inquiries regarding USM’s instructional programs.
Encourages positive parent involvement, facilitates parent-teacher conferences, attends parent advisory meetings, and works cooperatively with the Parents’ Association.
Works collaboratively with administration to ensure compliance with relevant legal requirements and ISACS educational standards.
Prepares and maintains records as required.
Assumes other duties as assigned.

Extensive knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent physical, emotional, and intellectual development.
Strong knowledge of curriculum design, planning, development, implementation and evaluation, assessment processes, and how they should operate in an effective independent school.
Secure knowledge of the School’s curriculum.

Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field
10-15 years’ related successful experience as an educator and administrator preferred
Successful experience working with Middle School students
Previous experience working effectively with culturally and socioeconomically diverse populations
