St. Johns Country Day School, a dynamic independent preschool through Grade 12 college preparatory school, is seeking a Director of College Counseling. The Director of College Counseling will oversee all aspects of the college counseling program at St. Johns. This position will be an integral part of the school’s program to guide students in Grades 8-12 (and their parents) through academic planning and the college search and admissions process. 100% of St. Johns graduates are accepted to college or university and the College Counseling Office will continue to drive that success.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Lead and effectively manage the college counseling department including one Associate Director and one full time support staff member • Advise students and families as they move through the college research, application, and selection process • Assist the registrar in keeping accurate permanent records of students’ testing and academic work. • Write letters of recommendation • Oversee the faculty writing of requested student recommendations • On an ongoing basis, review, adjust, and improve the college counseling program • Execute on-campus programs and workshops for parents, students, and college admissions representatives • Advise on course selection, registration, and consequences in the college selection process • Prepare regular mailings and electronic parent communications in tandem with the communications staff • Oversee seniors’ progress through the fall process of finalizing college lists and submitting applications • Oversee the various student award programs and scholarship applications. • Visit college campuses to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with college admission personnel • Manage department meetings to guide and facilitate the work of the office • Attend faculty and administrative meetings as scheduled • Maintain an attractive, informative, and up-to-date College Counseling Office. • Establish and maintain a yearly budget • Represent the school at relevant state and national conferences and workshops. • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School. • Support the school and its leadership.
Desirable attributes include: • A detail-oriented approach to work and outstanding communication skills including writing, listening, and public speaking • The energy, patience, and sense of humor necessary to work effectively with high school students and their families • Proficiency in MS Office, Naviance and Google Docs • An ideal candidate will have extensive experience in selective college admissions and/or college counseling • An interest in and openness to professional growth and development
• An advanced degree is strongly preferred • Three to five years of experience in a similar position including student-counseling experience. • A vision for preparing students to thrive in a world of constant change, encompassing a global perspective, character and skills development, and sustaining a love of learning • Team management in a collaborative environment • Thorough knowledge of college admissions and financial aid practices • Organizing and coordinating skills
Additional Salary Information: A salary commensurate with experience, degree attainment, and qualifications is paid to employees annually.
