Girard College seeks an experienced Long Term Substitute for the role of the High School Counselor for a position which is expected to begin mid-November 2018 and is expected to last until mid-February 2019. Reporting to the Dean of Counseling Services, the role of the High School Counselor is primarily one of guidance, with a thorough understanding of the complexities and challenges of a high school college preparatory program. The High School Counselor provides socio-emotional support to students, coordinates standardized testing, and helps families navigate the financial demands of college matriculation. This person works closely with the Assistant Dean of High School.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and implement counseling "action plans" that address student academic needs
Participate on High School Academic Support Team
Provide guidance to families of students who have been referred to outside agencies for emotional and psychological support
Facilitate and maintain appropriate communication with Residential Advisors and instructional faculty in response to academic and behavioral needs
Provide the Dean of Counseling Services with weekly counseling logs and complete required reports in a timely manner
Participate in 11th and 12th Grade Team Meetings
Develop and maintain constructive relationship with parents/ guardians
Provide counseling and college-related counseling services to Juniors and Seniors (i.e. assist with writing recommendations, reviewing college essays)
Participate in parent / student college meetings throughout year
Serve as Internal coordinator for AP, Keystone, SAT, ACT and other standardized testing
Update Naviance data as needed
Help students abide by College Counseling Handbook guidelines
Collect data for Girard College school profile and secondary school report.
Assist with planning of Career Day and College Fair
Assist with coordination of College Day
In collaboration with Deans work with parents on matters of financial aid, FAFSA completion, scholarship awards, etc.
Participate in all professional development activities assigned by Girard College
Teach, if requested, in College preparation courses.
Graduate degree in school counseling, psychology or social work with relevant counseling experience.
2-3 yrs. Previous counseling experience in a school setting serving youth age 12 to 18.
Counseling Certification required
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Proven ability to work collaboratively
Local candidates preferred as there is no relocation reimbursement available
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
