Reports to the Head of Upper School and works closely with the leadership team, faculty, students, staff, and parents to maintain a positive, safe school environment. The Assistant Head of Upper School is responsible for faculty and student oversight. This position implements and enforces the disciplinary policy, coordinates programs with other departments, meets with students who have exhibited poor conduct, and resolves concerns accordingly. This position plays a central role in monitoring students’ needs and achievements, organizing campus life, and communicating with all stakeholders. The Assistant Head of Upper School supports faculty academically and is responsible for assisting with faculty observations and promoting student engagement and instructional improvement.
Responsibilities and Abilities
Assumes responsibility when the Head of Upper School is not available
Assists in scheduling of academic courses, observing faculty and providing constructive feedback
Collaboratively assists with evaluations and the hiring of new faculty
Helps students reach their full potential through commitment, creativity, and enthusiasm
Oversees student behavior and discipline management
Works collaboratively to develop and implement school wide programs that reinforce accountability, school culture, values, and participation
Provides updates to faculty and staff to insure consistent communication and accountability
Oversees and facilitates communication between faculty, staff and parents
Schedules daily activities, teacher duties, special events, transportation, etc.
Oversees and assigns student lockers, advisories, study halls, clubs, student leadership, etc.
Maintains accurate, detailed student and faculty records
Demonstrates enthusiastic commitment to maintaining and facilitating a positive school culture
Resolves discipline problems in a fair and just manner
Ensures safety and emergency preparedness for the Upper School
Be willing and able to teach a class if needed
Education and Experience
Advanced degree (masters level) in education preferred
Superior organizational skills and the ability to work with a high level of consistency and integrity
Leadership experience in an independent school setting
Highly developed communication skills, both verbal and written
Possesses a great sense of humor and optimism along with an unbridled faith in students’ ability to learn and grow
