Allen Academy seeks an enthusiastic and creative Performing Arts/Drama teacher, beginning in the fall of 2019. This teacher should have a passion for working with young people, a willingness to work in a collegial setting, and an ability to use technology as a tool of engagement to foster deep learning. This position also requires an adaptive candidate who can work effectively and compassionately with students in both the Middle (grades 6-8) and Upper School (grades 9-12). Student-centered lesson plans and engaging experiences for students are increasing emphases at Allen. Our dynamic department requires a flexible candidate with a growth mindset who can offer some drama classes and lead productions and possibly (but not required to) combine drama with dance or choir.
The department expects a self-motivated colleague with exceptional oral and written communication skills. This individual will participate collaboratively and professionally with other faculty and staff to promote the general well-being of the school community in a manner that supports and promotes Allen Academy’s mission.
Major Areas of Responsibility
Foster a culture of innovation and curiosity leading to new and creative opportunities for our students.
Attend departmental meetings, collaboratively set annual department goals, and report on progress to the Department Chair and the Head of Middle/Upper School.
Teach four classes and direct two/three theater productions throughout the year.
Be an advisor for a small group of students
Map, execute, and assess departmental curriculum in collaboration with faculty and administration.
Experience guiding children (not necessarily in a school setting)
A combination of the following would make a candidate stronger:
Expertise in other performing arts fields (choral, dance, etc.)
Vision for a growing theater department
Ideas about moving education forward in dynamic ways
M.A./M.S. in related field
Experience in independent schools
Demonstrated recent professional/personal growth
