Reporting to the Head of High School, the Math Specialist is responsible for designing and implementing math support activities for grades 9 through 12 that strengthen the abilities of high school learners as they build to post-secondary educational levels. This teacher works with all students in these grades to inform and assess their math abilities and to identify students who may be struggling in math and need additional support, whether individually or in small groups. This work will be accomplished by “pushing in” to the math class and working with individuals or groups or by “pulling out” other students who need to have assistance without distraction of the whole classroom.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborate with High School math teachers (grade 9 -12 teachers) to use topics being taught in class to design math assistance options as well as with teachers in other disciplines, instructional coaches, and residential staff responsible for the high school students.
Work one-on-one or in small groups with assigned students who need intervention in a separate classroom.
Communicate the results of testing and evaluation of assigned students to their teacher, school administrators and parents timely and as appropriate.
Identity needs and make recommendations for appropriate instructional materials and assessments that directly support and align to the Common Core State Standards.
Meet regularly with department teachers and the Head of High School to report on instructional practices and progress while also planning “next steps” for student and school improvement.
Create and implement a classroom visit and interventionist schedule monthly and share with school administrators.
Design math “laboratory” activities as needed
Utilize simulations, models and other technological means to extend math learning
Conduct year-long classes/practice sessions designed to help students prepare for math standardized tests
Facilitate and maintain appropriate communication with students, Academic and Residential Advisors in regards to student progress
Have significant competency in integrating technology into instruction
Model all Core Values and maintain appropriate student behavior
Participate in student enrichment activities such as meetings, retreats, field trips and other events as needed to support the educational program
Participate fully in the college academic and residential community
Participate in all professional development activities assigned by Girard College
Develop and maintain constructive relationship with parents
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Head of High School
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics required, Degree in Education
Instructional Certification Required, PA Instructional Certification preferred.
At least five years of teaching experience
Excellent time management skills
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in leadership behaviors
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Chromebooks and other appropriate classroom technological tools
Local candidates preferred as there is no relocation reimbursement available
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act
