Reporting Reports to: Head of Senior School Supervises: Registrar, Learning Specialist
Position Description The Dean of Studies is the academic leader of the Senior School and as such, inspires curricular innovation and fosters best practices in teaching and learning. In close collaboration with the Head of School, the Dean is responsible for overseeing the curriculum, and for monitoring, evaluating, and implementing all academic policies and procedures. The Dean facilitates conversations about vertical and horizontal curricular alignment within the Senior School and across the divisions at the Academy. The Dean is knowledgeable about current and future trends in pedagogy, curriculum, and education, and shares that knowledge with faculty as appropriate, in cooperation with the Head of School. The Dean coordinates faculty efforts to help each student pursue an appropriate course of study, works with the Scheduler and Registrar to establish an appropriate master schedule, assists the Form Deans in monitoring the academic progress and overall well-being of each student, and arranges departmental end-of-term and end-of-year final exams. The Dean is responsible for contact and consultation with parents regarding academic concerns and faculty actions related to academics. The Dean supervises the Registrar and Learning Specialist.
The ideal candidate will be a clear, confident, and empathetic communicator, be able to see issues from multiple perspectives (student, parent, faculty member), have patience and flexibility, and enjoy working with a close-knit team.
Strategic planning for academic programs and curriculum, as well as space for curricular programs
Serve as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, pedagogy, and general school procedures
Identify opportunities for professional development in pedagogy and curriculum innovation
Monitor student academic performances and coordinate Form Deans’ evaluation of student academic performance through review of interim and formal grade reports
Listen and respond to parent concerns about student schedules and academic progress
Coordinate and lead Student Standing Committee (SSC) process which includes:
Coordinating formal student review meetings with Form Dean and advisor, and Counselor and/or Learning Specialist as needed
Communicating academic concerns and official faculty actions related to academic sanctions to a student and his/her family
Coordinate and oversee student medical leave process
Supervise setting of Senior School Master Calendar (with Registrar and Academy Calendar Coordinator) and keep community informed about events, schedule changes, etc.
Work with Scheduler and Registrar to create master schedule
Assist Registrar with review and approval of changes to individual student academic schedules
Assist Registrar with monitoring the fulfillment of graduation requirements
Promote, in conjunction with School Heads and Assistant Heads from the Senior, Middle, Junior, and Country Day Schools, cross-divisional conversations about curriculum and curricular alignment
Facilitate the Form II to Form III transition with the Head and/or Associate Head of Middle School
Coordinate Summer Prep for students new to Shady Side Academy
Oversee, in collaboration with faculty member in charge of programs, independent study requests and senior project program
Work with Department Chairs to arrange end-of-term and end-of-year exams
Coordinate nominations and selection process for Senior School Prizes
Teach one section of a course within academic curriculum
Advise standard group of students
Serve on the following school committees:
Academic Programs Committee
Student Standing Committee - Chair
Senior School Administrative Team
Independent Study Committee
Senior Project Committee
Other duties as assigned by Head of Senior School
BA required; MA preferred
Minimum five to seven years’ administrative experience
Experience in and/or demonstrated passion for curricular research, development, and design
Exemplary written and oral communication skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Proactive ability to initiate actions and develop programs with minimal supervision
Superior attention to detail and organization skills
Demonstrated leadership experience
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusivity
Ability to multitask and prioritize workload
Must be empathetic, diplomatic, assertive, at ease and eager to put oneself in social situations and groups
Willingness to be part of a team
Facility with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Blackbaud, Adobe Acrobat, Smartboards, and/or other technology directly linked to teaching at the Academy
Compensation Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Excellent health and retirement benefits are part of the employment package. Lunch is included when school is in session. Funding exists to support continuing education and professional development.
