Founded in 1810, The Lawrenceville School, one of the country’s premier independent schools, is located in central New Jersey, five miles south of Princeton, 55 miles south of New York City, and 40 miles north of Philadelphia. The Lawrenceville School announces an opening for a full time history teacher. We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic, collegial individuals who want to work with both adults and high school students in a collaborative and inclusive academic setting. The Lawrenceville History Department encourages students to understand the nature and methods of historical inquiry as part of their development as critical thinkers, to learn about accounts of the past in order to expand their perspectives on the present, and to encourage their development as well-informed, curious, and engaged global citizens.
Typical responsibilities include the following:
Teach four sections/two to three preps per trimester.
Two seasons of coaching or equivalent co-curricular commitment, including at least one season of interscholastic coaching (or the equivalent).
Advise five to eight students, and do one evening a week of “House duty,” providing supervision in a student residence from 7-11:30 pm. Although not necessarily starting their first year, faculty who reside in School-provided housing are expected to spend eight years living in one of the residential houses at some point in their career.
Chaperone a weekend activity (dance, coffee house, etc.) at least once per term.
The strongest applicants will have the following qualifications:
M.A. in History or related field, or M. Ed. with BA in History (or related field).
At least three years high school teaching experience.
Ability to teach both introductory and advanced courses in history, especially US History.
Ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in Economics.
Ability to teach historiography and the nature of historical argument and historical thinking.
A passion for history and for the teaching of history.
Experience teaching historical research and writing.
Experience in curricular design.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed and appropriate.
Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Google suite and Microsoft Office suite.
