Preferred Qualifications: Rye Country Day School is looking for candidates who possess a Master’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education with a minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience with some experience in first grade. Ideally, the candidate would have a background in Responsive Classroom and be willing to work as a team to foster the intellectual and social development of the six and seven year old. Facility with technology such as the SMARTBoard; iPad and other tools to enhance program is important. Lastly, experience with Teachers’ College Reading and Writing Workshop, Preventing Academic Failure Phonics Program and Singapore math programs are a plus. This position would begin in March 2019 and continue through the end of the school year.
The responsibilities of the first grade teacher include, but are not limited to:
Possessing a deep understanding of the social /emotional milestones of this age
Working collaboratively with the other first grade teacher to ensure continuity in the curriculum
Maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and parents; contributing in a supportive manner to the life of the community; treating information related to students as strictly confidential.
Assuming responsibility for instructional planning, implementation, and assessment of the curriculum
Providing an end of the year progress report that reflects both an assessment with clear benchmarks and narrative pieces
Participating in the creation of first grade newsletters on a biweekly basis
Communicating with families on a regular basis
Working with an assistant teacher by collaborating on a daily basis as a first grade partnership in planning lessons
Instilling a love of math, reading, and writing, with underpinnings in phonics
Attending faculty meetings as well as all division and grade level meetings
