Reports to: Lower School and Middle/Upper School Directors
As a member of the Modern Languages Department and Lower School Division, classroom teachers are responsible for teaching students in their specified grade level. Specifically, the Mandarin language teacher introduces beginning Mandarin speaking and listening skills to our youngest students along with building their knowledge of the culture. Students in our middle and upper schools learn Chinese characters, practice speaking skills applying appropriate grammar, and construct meaningful and purposeful writing pieces. Additionally, all CIS teachers support the social, emotional and character development of each student in his/her class.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teach Mandarin to students in second through ninth grades
Update and create curriculum in conjunction with departmental goals
Create opportunities for students to understand the culture of Mandarin speakers as well as the language
Collaborate with the other Modern Language teachers in order to establish consistent, meaningful connections for learning
Record progress of each student and keep assessment materials organized in preparation for fourth quarter progress reports
Attend faculty, divisional, and in-service meetings as scheduled
Support the mission of the school through teaching, advising, and participating as a member of the faculty
Fluency in Mandarin Chinese
Bachelor’s degree in Mandarin preferred
Minimum of 2-5 years teaching experience is preferred
Demonstrated passion for working with children and an understanding of the developmental needs of the age group
Highly skilled teacher with effective pedagogical and classroom management techniques
Effective written and oral communicator
