The Director of the Lower School is the educational and spiritual leader of the Lower School. Reporting to the Head of School, the Director is responsible for all aspects of the Lower School program, including but not limited to: the development and review of curricula; assessment and development of instructional practices; hiring of certified staff and the assessment of personnel performance; scheduling; budget development and management; Lower School communication with the parent community; student discipline and the development and implementation of all academic and administrative policies related to the operation of the Lower School. The Director of the Lower School shall work in a close, collegial manner with the administrative team and the Lower School faculty in fulfilling some of these responsibilities, particularly in student spiritual and faith formation, the development of curricula, the assurance of instructional quality and the development academic policies and procedures.
The Director of Lower School reports to the Head of School and is a key member of the Administrative Team. In this role, the Director is responsible for contributing to the overall leadership of the school. The Administrative Team acts in a collaborative approach to managing the programs and operation of the school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of the Lower School (the Director) has oversight responsibilities for all aspects of the academic program of the Lower School (PreK - 5th Grade), including experiential and enrichment programs. In this regard, the Director establishes strategies and methods of meeting the spiritual, intellectual, academic, social, behavioral and physical needs of Lower School students in developmentally appropriate ways;
The Director works with administrative colleagues and the faculty in the continual review and revision of curricula, related programs and instructional practices to ensure that the Lower School continually provides an innovative, challenging and developmentally appropriate elementary education;
Working closely with the Director of the Middle School, the Director of the Lower School assures curricular continuity and coherence between the divisions and the thoughtful social transition of students from division to division;
The Director shall hire, support, mentor and evaluate a dedicated team of Lower School faculty and staff who bring expertise in elementary education, a love of children and passion for the craft of teaching;
The Director shall supervise the Coordinator of the Extended Day and Summer Programs to ensure quality childcare and enrichment opportunities.
The Director shall assure compliance with our licensing agencies for the Extended Day Program and the Preschool programs.
The Lower School Director, in collaboration with the Middle School Director, shall oversee programs for the orientation of new teachers. The Lower School Director shall schedule and plan “in-service” training and the related professional development of all Lower School teachers; the Director shall by foster a growth-oriented faculty culture, leading or generating conversations about best practices and important trends in education and implementing faculty growth and evaluation programs;
The Director shall serve as a resource and guide to faculty in their search for solutions to problems and in their work with individual students and parents;
The Director shall conduct regular meetings with faculty that focus on routine school matters and issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern;
The Director shall establish formal and informal means of communication with parents regarding the philosophy and program of the school, student progress, student behavior and administrative policies and procedures;
The Director will work closely with the School Counselor and Learning Support Specialists to assure individual student needs are communicated to appropriate faculty and supported in all school programs;
The Director, working collaboratively with the Director of Admissions and Enrollment Services, shall assist with the oversight of the admission and retention of students in the Lower School and student placement in classes;
The Director shall prepare and administer the annual operational budget for the Lower School;
The Director shall actively engage in the life of the school by being present at Lower School events in particular, and at school-wide events, as appropriate;
As directed by the Head of School, the Director shall represent the Lower School and its program to the Board of Trustees, the parent community, the Administrative Team, alumnae/i, professional organizations and the broader Seattle community;
The Director shall perform other duties, commonly associated with the position as assigned by Head of School.
It is essential that the Director of the Lower School create a collaborative, positive and inclusive environment conducive to open communication.
Villa’s new Director of the Lower School will be a practicing Catholic who has experience in and a commitment to Catholic education; he/she must understand, embrace and be able to articulate the mission and vision of Catholic education in general, and of Villa Academy specifically; he/she must possess the ability and willingness to relate well to students and members of the school community and to interact with them regularly.
The new Director will have had a successful background in teaching and leadership/administrative experience in a school setting. He/she will be a dynamic, energetic leader who facilitates learning, growth and collaboration both inside and outside the classroom.
The Director shall possess an earned Master’s Degree in Educational Administration or similar advanced degree;
The Director shall be certified as a Principal or be eligible to become certified by the State of Washington as a Principal;
The Director shall have excellent communication and organizational skills;
The Director will be able to articulate a vision of Catholic education in the 21st century that includes technology and current teaching methodologies; shall have a sound knowledge of school finances and development and an understanding of marketing and recruitment strategies in a competitive environment;

The Director will be able to articulate a genuine love for and understanding of young children, ages 3 - 11;
The Director shall articulate and demonstrate a commitment to cultural competence and an understanding of its important role in academic excellence and student preparation.
