The Riverdale Department of Music is seeking an enthusiastic, collegial and knowledgeable high strings and chamber music teacher to help develop technique and musical understanding in Middle and Upper School violin and viola students.
The position will involve teaching sections of sixth and seventh grade combined violin and viola classes, as well as co-directing along with the low strings specialist the combined sixth and seventh grade strings classes for concerts, coaching the Upper School orchestra's high strings sections, playing in concerts, and coaching a variety of instruments in the school's robust chamber music program, as needed. The willingness to make necessary minor instrument repairs is useful, as is an extensive familiarity with orchestra repertoire. Creating musical arrangements for the Middle School students using a music notation computer application is crucial, as is the ability to simplify difficult passages for some players and managing the school’s high strings inventory. Having in-depth professional experience as a high strings specialist is inspiring to students of all ages and will make a candidate especially attractive.
All candidates for Riverdale teaching positions should demonstrate an interest in engaging students in an environment that is both supportive and rigorous and will participate in community activities including advising students, service opportunities, and other co-curricular activities. A brief solo audition is a requisite as a part of the interview process. A Bachelor's degree is required; Master's and Doctoral degree holders will receive additional consideration, as will those with previous teaching and performance experience.
